Privacy & Security

How your data is handled — in plain English

We designed HelalScan so that checking a product doesn't cost you your privacy. Here's what actually happens, and why you can trust it.

What happens when you scan

📷 You scan a barcode
on your phone
🔒 Just the barcode is sent over HTTPS
no photo, no identity
A verdict comes back
with the reasons
🙈

Photos never leave your phone

When you photograph an ingredient list, the text is read on your device. The image is never uploaded — only the text you confirm is sent, and only if you choose to submit it.

🪪

No account, no identity

There's no sign-up. Instead of a login, the app uses a random identifier stored in your phone's secure keychain — not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID.

🚫

No trackers, no ads

The app contains no advertising, no analytics SDKs, and no cross-app tracking. We don't build a profile of you and we don't sell data.

🔐

Encrypted in transit

Everything between the app and our servers travels over HTTPS/TLS. Your device secret is kept in the operating system's secure enclave / keychain.

What we receive, and why

The barcode you scanTo look up the product and return a verdict. May be recorded to measure coverage and improve accuracy.
Ingredient text you submitOnly if you add a missing product or suggest a correction — the typed/confirmed text improves the shared database. Text only, never the photo.
A random device identifierTo keep your scan history on-device and to prevent abuse. Delete the app and it's gone.
Our promise on verdicts: we would rather say “needs verification” than wrongly call something halal. When the ingredients can't be confirmed, the app tells you that plainly instead of guessing.
